Furniture is something that everyone uses on a daily basis. There are many types, sizes and purposes for furniture. When you decorate your home you can decide to use antique furniture. This will give you benefits that you cannot get with modern decor. Here are just a few of them to look at.
Antique furnishings express the look and feel of days gone by. It is a pleasure to look at old and well crafted furniture. Perhaps you would like to own an antique roll top desk. You can take a trip back in time. At that desk, a man may sit and write. Perhaps he is taking telegraph messages. Maybe he is doing the books for his general store. There is a lot of history inside old furniture.
You may wish to have an elderly and majestic sleigh bed for your bedroom. These items are from many years ago. Some are made from beautiful hand crafted mahogany. The look and feel and of old mahogany, can be very warm and soothing. It may help you to sleep better at night.
How much storage and closet space do you own? An antique armoire can be a perfect fit. They will provide you with beauty and functionality. You can have your own closet space, too. These finely made units will be a pleasure to own and look at.
Maybe an antique dining room table suits your tastes. Some of them are very elaborate. You may like styles with large curves and intricate carvings. The feet of them may resemble a lion. You can have a fancy and formal meal on these tables. They are perfect for occasions like Thanksgiving. Many of them have drop leafs at each end. You can feed a large bunch of people. The beauty of tables like these can make holidays even more enjoyable.
Have you ever considered an antique television? They make a great conversation piece. Televisions today are very functional. Televisions of the past are pieces of furniture. They have well designed knobs and little panels for the controls. You will not see any type of input jacks. There will only be two screws in the back for an external antenna. It is OK if the set does not work. You can use it for appearance. You may also have a new television built inside of it. It may be expensive, but it will make your TV a rare sight. Everyone will notice, that enters your house.
Maybe you wish to have an antique radio. These are good additions to older decor. Do you want your guests to travel back in history? An old radio will help them start the journey. These things have not been around for many years. You may not think of radios as furniture. However, some of them are large and imposing pieces of furniture.
Conclusion
Are you thinking about redecorating your house? Consider a look of the past. Antique furniture supplies many benefits. It is well-made and will last long. It is sturdy to hold up under everyday use. It is functional and beautiful. It is the perfect way to give the look of days gone by. It may be a lovely way to spend the evening.

What To Do When Buying Or Selling A Grandfather Clock.
May 25, 2010 by Michael Flum
Is it time to sell that family heirloom, the antique grandfather clock, or buy a new family heirloom? Well your nearly done, have you had the antique clock or grandfather wall clock appraised? If not, do you know how to pick an appraiser? When looking for a professional appraiser, look for one who has an accreditation from a nationally recognized organization such as the "International Society of Appraisers (ISA)" or "American Society of Appraisers" or "Appraisers Association of America". Appraises that don't belong to one of these groups is not held to any ethical standard and maybe unqualified to appraise an antique grandfather wall clock.
A good appraiser will never be offended when asked for their qualifications or references.
When working with an accredited appraiser, they will be able to provide you with a professional profile and resume. A professional appraiser will have a formal education in appraisal theory, procedures, and ethics. They will have a deep understanding and knowledge of grandfather walls and will be up to date in the law. Remember, if the appraiser is not accredited, buyer beware!
Any appraiser can do the job, right?
To appraise an antique grandfather wall clock correctly, a particular kind of appraiser is required and not just one who knows antique furniture. They must know the cabinet markings, type of wood, and finish for this model of grandfather wall clock or pendulum clock. They will also know what type of grandfather wall clock movement was originally used and if the movement is mechanically sound. They will know whether the grandfather wall clock chime or tubes have been altered or changed after they left the factory. An accredited appraiser will know the details and some of the history of the clock and if not will be able to gather the correct information for you. Above all they will specialize in grandfather wall clocks and have a deep understanding of their origin and history.
Are they an accredited appraiser?
If an appraiser belongs to one of the national appraiser societies, they will have a high ethical standard. They must maintain this standard to be in good standing with the society. If not, they may find themselves barred from the society and this will affect their ability to do business. This means that an accredited appraiser we have a set of standards set forth by the society they belong to and must adhere to them. On the other hand, an unaccredited independent appraiser will not be held to any standard and can say and do anything they want. Is this someone you would trust when buying an expensive grandfather wall clock?
It's important to know how the appraiser is paid?
A professional appraiser is paid by the hour, a flat rate or by the piece. No accredited appraiser will ever charge a fee based on a percentage of the grandfather wall clock's value. Nor will they be paid on a contingency fee. Payments of this type are disallowed because of a likelihood of a conflict of interest. When all you want is an unbiased appraisal.
What will the final appraisal look like?
The report must be a formal typewritten document. It must contain a statement to the "type of value" or "purpose this appraisal" is for and how the appraisal will be used. It must contain the methods and resources used to document its value. It must contain a detailed and accurate description of the grandfather wall clock and any alterations done (replacements, repairs, restorations) so someone could identify the grandfather wall clock without photographs. If must contain the date, the location and the effective date of value. The report must contain a statement such that the appraiser has no financial interest in the grandfather wall clock or must state their financial interest clearly in the report. It will also contain the appraiser's qualifications and signature.
For those buying a grandfather wall clock.
When buying a grandfather wall clock or an antique clock of great value, it is best to have an appraiser's report. If the seller will not provide one, see if they will allow you to have an accredited appraiser of your choice come in to do an appraisal. If they still won't allow an appraisal to be done then move on, the clock is not likely to be of any great value. If they do provide an appraisal report then check it for a valid description, a statement of purpose, what fees were based on (hourly, by piece, by project), and the appraiser's qualifications. Also make sure the appraiser is willing to back any statements in a court of law (subject to a separate fee arrangement).

Jim Shore Angel Figurines -Creating Special Memories
May 22, 2010 by William Schuester
Jim Shore happens to be the brand more people these days think of when they're in search of collectible figurine angels. They are wildly popular and have absolutely done a great deal to get angel figurines to the forefront. Jim is now a popular artist in this area by considering the large quantity of Angel figurines which he has designed through the years. You will discover more than 100 Angels easily accessible online on any number of websites as well as plenty more on aftermarket web-sites like ebay.
Jim Shore has been designing collectible figurines for more than a decade now and his awesome Angels collection has been popular for nearly as long. The Angels which Jim designs reveal his beliefs being a spiritual individual not simply in their intended message but in their theme at the same time.. The wide selection of Angel collectible figurines Jim has created in his career tends to make the fact that he's even now excited to create brand new Angels after ten years really unbelievable. He has also widened his line of Angel collectible figurines to incorporate things like ornaments, water balls, bells and much larger figurines that still express the messages he intends to pass on.
As I take a look at all of the figurines that Jim has created, I am in awe of the broad scope of his work. He has created Angels based on several different ideas that cover almost every aspect of the lives we live. There are obviously collectibles designed strictly on religious beliefs, such as the, "Jesus Praying Angel", and the "Lord's Prayer" Angels, but there are also figurines designed around numerous other aspects of life where we all need a bit of encouragement and insight. One in particular that is a perfect example of this is the, "Angel of Bereavement" figurine that Jim has created. While it does share in the religious overtones displayed in his other designs, it also provides an outlet for our sorrow and to allow us to remember the special people in our lives that we have lost and to cherish their memories.
There are two figurines that Jim has designed that have a very special meaning to me. Both of the Angels are displayed with honor in my home as they bring special memories back to me daily. The two that I have selected as my favorites are ones that I cherish the most. They are, "Flag of Freedom Forever" Angel and the, "Born Into Loving Arms" Angel. My family is a military family and the patriotic angel holds a special place in my heart. The sacrifices the families all around the country, including my own, have made are not forgotten and we all must be reminded of the cost of freedom. The birth of my daughter is a very special memory. The, "Born into Loving Arms" Angel is a daily reminder of that very special day. Each time I see this piece displayed in her room I am reminded of the day she was born and what a miracle bringing in a daughter into this world truly is.
It is the memories that each figurine evokes in you that make them special. Jim does a wonderful job creating figurines that once they are in your home will invoke emotions that are tied to the theme of each piece. The two examples that I have given you from my personal collection are just the beginning of the stories that I could share on how these beautiful figurines make me smile each and every day. Selecting an Angel that will create a similar experience is not hard. You just have to let your heart lead you and the right choice will become quite evident.
With your own personal taste in collectible Angel figurines different from others the Jim Shore Collection overcome this by offering a wide selection of themes. With such a giant selection you can easily choose a few that you like. Because of the interest in angels as a subject matter, you will find an angel to meet your needs. Angel figurines by Jim Shore are priced reasonably so that they are affordable to most people. Jim does design a few larger and more rare items that are more expensive and if you choose to purchase a higher priced item the amount of money that you spend will not be wasted. Angels really are a wonderful addition to the home. Determine which design that suits you and experience the wonder of having a Jim Shore Angel figurine inside your home.

Value Of Old Postage Stamps
May 21, 2010 by Nigel Howell
There are many factors that detertmine the value of old postage stamps. Like any market they are subject to forces of supply and demand. You have the supply and demand for the particular stamps which is in part determined by the supply and demand for stamps in general.
So what determines supply? The age of the old postage stamps is usually a factor. If you think about it, the older something is the less likely it will have survived to this day. You also need to consider the face value of the old postage stamps. The higher they are then it was less likely that people bought them.
The thing that adds to the scarcity is errors on the old postage stamps. These are errors that occur during production. Obviously there aren't too many of these around because as soon as these are noticed then they are withdrawn from being produced and distributed straight away.
Demand for old postage stamps in general has increased in recent years because investors have been looking for alternative ways to make money. Antiques, wines and collectables like old postage stamps have all been in demand.
Like anything the condition of the old postage stamps are a factor in their value. The better the condition the higher the value so it is important that you have the correct storage in place for your old postage stamps.
Just because the old postage stamps have been used doesn't mean they are worth anything. They do have a value. In fact they may be worth more than the mint version in the right condition.
Old postage stamps are cancelled by a cancellation stamp. Now this cancellation stamp can affect the value. If they are cancelled by the standard stamp then they won't be worth as much as those cancelled with something unusual.
So when you are thinking about the value of old postage stamps you need to think in terms of supply and demand. Remember just because a stamp issue is popular now doesn't mean it will carry a high value in the future. Old postage stamps that were popular in the past are likely now to have a high supply so keep that in mind.
Nigel has a renewed passion for old postage stamps. He inherited his passion along with his first stamp collection from his Grandad. If you would like to know more about this and the http://www.oldpostagestamps.net/value-of-old-postage-stamps/value-of-old-postage-stamps-2 then visit his website.

Important Events For The Ultimate Elvis Fans
May 20, 2010 by Richard Nottingdon
There is more to celebrating Elvis than just listening to his music, or starting your own anthology of Elvis Presley collectables; each year many fans come together for Elvis gatherings in countless areas all over the world. We've found some of these events so you can attend one close to home or even take a trip abroad to plan around your next holiday.
International Elvis Championship
The International Elvis Championship is held each year in England in the central location of Birmingham [1]. It is held over the weekend of his Birthday - from the 6th to 8th of January; meaning the next event will be held in 2011. The best way to imagine this event is to picture 70 of the world's top Elvis tributes, battling it out for the title of International Champion. There is more to the weekend than just the competition though, as there are live bands, showcases, and even a disco. It's where to go if you love the King of Rock N Roll!
Elvis Party Event
The awesome Elvis Party Event is another located in the UK in September [2], this time in the Golden Sands Holiday Resort in Mablethorpe. As the event lasts for a week, guests will have many opportunities to enjoy the music of Elvis Presley, as well as other events during the course of the week. In typical seaside resort style, there is bingo and discos, but this time with an Elvis themed twist. If it all gets too much, there is a beach across the road from the caravan accommodation that has your name on it.
Elvis Cruise
This event takes us abroad this time, to the sunshine destination of Florida and the Caribbean. This will be the 4th annual cruise, where passengers will set sail to Elvis themed entertainment, including presentations from various Elvis's friends [3]. Some travel providers include a Florida short break on either side of the cruise, to combine the attractions of Florida with the very themed boat trip. The Elvis Cruise is most suited to you if you've always wanted to see Florida or the Caribbean; and of course if you love Elvis.
Elvis 2010
There are two destinations where fans can celebrate this event, either in Memphis USA, or Bad Nauheim in Germany. The more authentic choice is the Memphis trip in August, where Elvis Week takes place [4]. Visitors to Elvis Week will be able to choose from various events ,which celebrate his life and success. Aside from live acts, tribute artists, and discussions, visitors will also be able to visit Graceland where Elvis used to live. True Elvis Presley fans will be in attendance here, so book early to join in the fun.
Richard Nottingdon is a freelance writer who in a life long Elvis fan and has a particular interest in Elvis Presley collectables.

Military Care Package Ideas
May 19, 2010 by James Newton
Sending care packages to soldiers overseas shouldn't be hard for us and doesn't need to time consuming. Many people have asked me for tips and ideas for military care packages. I've written this article to give just a few quick tips on sending packages overseas to our soldiers.
First, remember to include a letter in the care package. It doesn't have to be long or say anything Earth-shattering - even just a note will do. While overseas, its nice to read about even the simple routines that our brave military men and women miss so much. If its difficult to write a letter all at once, try just keeping a notebook where you write a few lines a few times a day to your soldier. Date the pages and let your soldier read what your days are like and how you're doing. After a few days, you'll be surprised at the length of the letter and pleased that you've shown your friend or loved one how often throughout your days you've thought of him or her.
Second, filling a military care package doesn't have to be frustrating - looking for those perfect items. If you only intend to send one package throughout the deployment, yes, put a little more thought into it. But ask yourself, wouldn't it be as nice (if not nicer) to send simple, inexpensive things as often as you can. Filling that box will be a lot easier if you remind yourself that you'll send something else in another week or two. If your soldier loved hard candy, send a bunch, and next week you'll think of something else. The military will keep our soldiers from starving, we're looking to show our support by sending extras. It doesn't have to be expensive or "the perfect gift." Anything at all lets our soldiers know that we're thinking of them and anything they don't like will easily be traded for something else or shared with others.
Unless your soldier asks for it specifically, stay away from items that the military issues. Socks and underwear are a great example. Most of the time, these items are available to our soldiers, but if you're unsure, certainly email your soldier and find out. Chap stick and sunscreen are also items soldiers need, but they may have plenty already - so check. Ask your soldier if they have access to DVD players, microwaves, etc. Different bases will have different amenities. Remember, if you send DVDs or magazines, no explicit stuff.
Finally, if your schedule doesn't allow you to make all the stops to gather care package items, searching for military care package sites where you'll be able to create custom care packages for soldiers and have them sent directly overseas. Only minutes to order, packed with care, its a simple way to show your love and support for our nation's military.
With constant debate over issues in the news, it's more and more important for us to find ways to show our support for our troops. If you have friends or family currently deployed overseas, find a way to let them know you're thinking of them constantly. Remind them that everyone here at home supports them.

Ideas When Finding Less-Priced Secondhand Jewelry
May 18, 2010 by Allison Green
Do you love antique jewelry but are limited by your budget to only buying occasional pieces? It's true that genuine antique jewelry is valuable and quite highly priced. However, there are ways of paying much less for it.
Online auction sites such as eBay are a great way to buy old jewelry. But we warned that the sellers tend to be well acquainted with the value of their jewelry, so this isn't going to be the cheapest way of buying. There are other places you can look that might offer a better deal.
It's a good idea to head out to any estate sales or garage sales that are listed in your local newspaper. The people selling old jewelry at these events are usually keen to offload as many items as possible, and often have no idea of its true value. You may only spend a small amount of money, but you could go home with jewelry worth thousands of dollars!
There's always the possibility of finding something really valuable. But if your purchases turn out to have very little value, you might like to take them apart and use the bits to create new pieces.
Once you've discovered that there's antique jewelry to be found at yard and estate sales, you'll be keen to keep visiting them. The excitement of spotting a bargain can be quite addictive.
Very cheap pieces can be found at estate sales where young people are selling off what they consider to be their grandmother's ugly old jewelry at extremely low prices.
There's no need to drop eBay altogether. The jewelry, vintage and antique sections should be checked on a regular basis for interesting items.
When you are sure you want to bid on an item, the first thing to do is to verify that the seller has a good reputation. Then, get in touch with him or her to ensure that you know just what it is you're buying. It's advisable to take advantage of the escrow facility recommended by eBay, too.
