Computers Going New Versus Upgrading Your Old

As the New Year has come and gone, it's time to decide if buying a new laptop is something you should do. Pricing is continuing to get lower and lower as consumers have curbed spending over the last year. With that comes an overstock of new electronics with prices that are dropping daily.
Are you trying to decide if you should take advantage of the low pricing and purchase a new laptop? Then the second big question is new or refurbished. Another thing you should think about is used.
While there are people making the decision about purchasing a new computer, the resale market is now full of "not so old" computers for a fraction of the price. Like a new car, depreciation on the laptop is considerable after a couple of years, however technology doesn't change that much. First do a search and see what you come up with.
Ebay is a great source for used laptops as well as refurbished along with new in the box models for less. An off lease model from Dell, Sony or Panasonic could be an option. These are not so old and typically are refurbished to nearly new prior to going back on the market.
Something I found interesting was on the Dell website was that they have refurbished off lease models that you can purchase without an operating system. Many of us already have these from our previous laptop purchase if we bought the software new. That operating systems can be reinstalled in your refurbished Dell and you are up and running.
Buying an off lease from the manufacturer can save you a considerable amount of money. Again, these computers have been completely refurbished as are just like new. You can basically pick and choose your options and the money you save could give you a better computer for the price than buying new.
The best thing to do is to put it all on paper. Make yourself a list of what you want on your new laptop, price it all out and then do the same for your refurbished. I bet that you will see that you might save enough money to make this a logical solution. I even purchased an extended 3-year warranty on my refurbished and still saved over $250.
Now I bet that a lot of you are sitting there going, "how do I install my own memory?" Well, it's totally simple in a laptop so don't let that discourage you from going used or refurbished. Ebay also has great prices on operating systems if you need to upgrade that as well. All simple and easy and you have yourself a 'like new' computer.
One final option and the least expensive can be to purchase a new external hard drive. Those are usually about $100 or less and you can transfer all your photos, documents and other items to your external hard drive which will free up space on your laptop. Once you have done that, upgrade to more memory and off you go, a computer that runs like new.
